enerally, we have 3000 to 5000 board feet of lumber available for sale at Prairie Oaks Farm. The species include walnut, oak-mostly white, cherry, hickory and at times, basswood. All of our lumber is logged on the farm in an ecologically sound manner. Trees are felled, then skidded with our tractor-mounted skidder to the farmstead site. Then, depending on availability, quantity, time, and cost we haul them to a local sawmill or have a portable bandsaw come to the farm. After sawing, the lumber is stickered and stored to air dry for 2-3 years.
We sell the lumber somewhat differently than you normally find at the lumberyard. The boards are rough planed only and sold as log run. We do not sort or grade the boards. This way of selling works well for the woodworker who has a planer and joiner, and who also does enough project work that they can use the various size pieces produced. The advantage to the woodworker is that the price is half or less than the sorted and graded price.
